Topic

The AI systems in focus for project managers in 2026 look nothing like the predictive models of five years ago. Agentic AI systems perceive, decide, and act autonomously across tools, databases, and workflows. The risk has shifted from "the model gave a wrong answer" to "the agent took a wrong action." Over 40% of agentic AI projects are expected to be canceled within the next year due to escalating costs, unclear value, or inadequate risk controls, and 80% of organizations have already encountered risky behaviors from deployed agents. Yet most PMs are still applying traditional IT governance to systems that need fundamentally different oversight.

This session draws on two decades of governing high-risk AI systems in financial services to give project managers a practical governance toolkit for the agentic AI era. Attendees will learn how to scope an agent's "action space" and autonomy level during planning, structure human-in-the-loop checkpoints that preserve the value of autonomy, define what "done" means for a system whose outputs change with context, and monitor agent behavior post-deployment when actions evolve in ways no requirements document anticipated.
